Throwing on the Wheel:
We offer both 6-week private sessions, and single introductory classes. Wheel throwing classes for many people are metaphorically a rubber hitting the road type experience. At Daniels Family Pottery, an indepth explanation on the theory of pottery making, generates practical tangible, and gratifying results. No experience needed. During the first meeting the emphasis is on becoming familiar with technique, not on creating a finished product.
6-Week Privates Sessions:
Over a period of 6 weeks, with concentration and a supportive studio environment, your ideas will grow from hopeful dreams to appreciated lifelong pots. You’ll experience closeup demonstrations using tried and true ways. Together we’ll reduce pottery making to a series of essential steps. In time you’ll develop the steps, leading to your own style. Instruction includes the basic fundamentals, showing you how to create functional art in a short time. After a few demonstrations the wheel is turned over to you, the guest, and the fun gets going.
Single Introductory Class:
We also offer the option to experience a single introductory class before committing to a full six-week session. After in depth demonstration and explanation of the process, the wheel is turned over to you, to get a feel for the mechanics of wheel throwing.
$75.00 per hour. $110 for and hour-and-a-half. Includes materials.
A great time is guaranteed. Conveniently located alongside Friendly Park in Eugene.

“Thank you for all your time and energy in my wheel throwing lessons with you this fall. The breadth and depth of knowledge that you have to offer is beyond impressive and is only surpassed by the wisdom that you share. It seems to me that creating pottery is as much a spiritual experience to you as it is a physical practice. And sharing in this experience with you has been nothing short of inspiring. I believe that with the technical fundamentals and the Zen approach that you have instilled in me, that I will continue to improve as an artist and craftsperson…” ~ Anya Dobrowolski
“Thank you Steve! You and your family are so great!…I really enjoy your teaching style and feel that I am improving already…I’m excited to have this new skill. It’s going to be really fun to see how I progress in the next few weeks with some additional training from a really skilled potter. What a blessing!!…Steve Daniels is a talented artist and a wonderful person.” ~ Brandi Gleason
Handbuilding:
In the handbuilding class I teach basic skills, such as pinch potting, coiling, scoring/slipping and rolling slabs, enabling the student to form the clay into their vision. I give ideas and show examples of things one might try making, such as textured tiles (using improvised tools like real plants or rubber lizards),animal sculptures, faces, butter dishes, soap dishes, chess pieces, etc.
Students tend to try out a few things, then quickly become inspired to create their own ideas. I give them the freedom to try whatever they want, while guiding them with suggestions on how to make the final piece hold together. My enthusiasm is genuine in that I am just as inspired by the ideas that the students come up with as they are by mine (probably more so). This kind of enthusiasm tends to be infectious and self-perpetuating.
Students glaze their own work and then their work is fired. All ages are welcome. Instructor: Leonie Daniels. $240 per student; $125 for each additional family member.
