Throwing on the Wheel:
During wheel throwing classes Steve Daniels provides one-on-one attention, tailored to the students’ needs. First we discuss any prior clay experiences that the student has. Then we cover fundamentals of kneading, centering, and opening up the clay. After the student is comfortable with this, we work on pulling and shaping clay into a useful pot. Glazing and firing methods are also covered. Completed pieces are fired.
Wheel throwing is $50 per hour. This includes clay, tools, glaze, firing, tea, encouragement, whatever is needed. Over the past 20+ years teaching, every single student has been quite satisfied with the experience. A great time is guaranteed.
In the handbuilding class Leonie teaches basic skills, such as pinch potting, coiling, scoring/slipping and rolling slabs, enabling the student to form the clay into their vision. She gives ideas and shows examples of things one might try making, such as textured tiles (using improvised tools like real plants or rubber lizards), animal sculptures, faces, butter dishes, soap dishes, chess pieces, etc.
Students tend to try out a few things, then quickly become inspired to create their own ideas. She gives them the freedom to try whatever they want, while guiding them with suggestions on how to make the final piece hold together. Her enthusiasm is genuine in that she’s just as inspired by the ideas that the students come up with as they are by hers (probably more so). This kind of enthusiasm tends to be infectious and self-perpetuating.
Handbuilding is $25.00 per person per hour. This includes glazing & firing.
